The Current State of Southern Baptist Preaching

Alan Bandy and Michael Bryant over at The Pastor as Theologian are committed to providing pastors with resources to help them bridge the gap between scholarship and ministry, especially in their pulpit ministries. One of the features of the blog is interviews with SBC pastors and educators on the current state of Southern Baptist preaching. Recent interviews include Dr. David Allen, Dean of the School of Theology, Professor of Preaching, Director of the Center for Expository Preaching and George W. Truett Chair of Ministry at Southwestern Seminary and Rev. Ben Brammer, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, NC and Ph.D. student in preaching at Southeastern Seminary. The Allen interview can be found here and here, while the Brammer interview can be found here and here.

  1. Thanks for the link Nathan. Right now I'm in a discussion with some guys on another blog about how to preach the OT. I'm thinking about posting a short blog on it in order to get some discussion going on how we should preach Christ from the OT.

  2. JCopp, I think that would be a great topic to discuss. Definately an important (and often thorny) issue.

  3. I echo that Nathan.  Do it Jed.  Nathan, good post.  I didn't know about Alan and Michael's blog. Their interviews with Ben and Dr. Allen were helpful as both provided strong insight.  Dr. Allen's statement concerning strenghing the training in our seminaries, "Train the entire faculty to teach in their respective disciplines with a view toward the end product: a pastor/theologian preaching in the pulpit."  I know many of my own professors have this in view, for why else do we receive the training but to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and get that truth out to others.  Also, Ben has it right in his commendation of Stephen Rummage and David Platt as lesser known preachers within the convention who faithfully preach with great effect.
